Phil Jackson, probably the best coach in the NBA, has never even won the award. Avery Johnson, probably one of the worst (and now fired) coaches, won the award even though he should not have. Before answering this question, we should answer the fundamental question of what in the heck does the coach in the year award mean and how is awarded.
