Did Mike Brown Deserve the Coach of the Year Award?

21 May 2009 One Comment

How much coaching one has to do with Lebron James in your lineup remains to be seen, but Cleveland Cavaliers Mike Brown has nonetheless be awarded Coach of Year by the NBA. Brown coached the Cavs to a franchise-record 66 wins, a second Central Division title and the No. 1 overall seed in the postseason.

The 38-year-old coach has cajoled his team to trust one another, gave his assistants more responsibility, integrated off season acquisition Mo Williams into the lineup and did one of the hardest things to do in professional coaching, handle a superstar. James is obvious on his way to adding an MVP award to his cavalcade of accomplishment.

Generally, the best player on the best team (this year it’s James) usually wins the MVP. However, the Coach Of Year seldom goes to the best team’s coach. For instance, New Orleans Hornets coach Byron Scott won the award last year.

Brown received 55 first-place votes and earned 355 total points from a gaggle of over 120 sports writers and broadcasters. Houston Rockets Rick Adelman finished second and the Orlando Magic Stan Van Gundy was third.

Cleveland currently leads the Detroit Pistons 1-0 in the first round of the NBA playoffs. Game 2 tips off Tuesday night.

It doesn’t really matter because the coach of the year award is useless. Phil Jackson, probably the best coach in the NBA, has never even won the award. Avery Johnson, probably one of the worst (and now fired) coaches, won the award even though he should not have.

Before answering this question, we should answer the fundamental question of what in the heck does the coach in the year award mean and how is awarded.
