2024 NL MVP Race:

As the 2024 regular season has come to a close, we take a look at the two players likely to finish 1-2 in the MVP award battle.

While Luis Robert, Ronald Acuña, Trent Grisham, Luis Arraez, Gleybar Torres, Cody Bellinger and numerous others have had amazing seasons, Tellez and Tatis Jr. have been the cream of the crop in 2024.

Tellez has put up a third consecutive season worthy of the MVP, and this is the year he may finally get over the hump as he led his team to the best record in baseball and set career highs in hits, HRs, RBIs, batting average, triples, OB%, steams and WAR. Tatis Jr. has himself had quite the season, leading the to the second Wild Card slot and leading the league in WAR.

Why Tellez wins it: The number are just ridiculous as Tellez put together perhaps the most prolific offensive season in history. Tellez ends the 2024 in the top 5 in the following categories:

  • Hits: 208 (#1)
  • Home Runs: 55 (#1)
  • RBIs: 151 (#1)
  • Runs: 128 (#1)
  • Total Bases: 416 (#1)
  • Batting Average: .337 (#3)
  • Slugging %: .673 (#1)
  • OPS: 1.080 (#1)
  • OBP: .407 (#5)
  • wRC+: 174 (#1)
  • WAR: 7.3 (#3)
  • RC/27: 10.3 (#2)
  • Isolated Power: .337 (#1)

Why Tatis Jr. wins it: Tatis put up a 30-60 season and led an offense that scores the 7th most runs in the NL while playing gold-glove caliber defense at 3B. Tatis Jr. ends the 2024 in the top 5 in the following categories:

  • Slugging %: .583 (#3)
  • OPS: .984 (#3)
  • wRC: 159 (#3)
  • WAR: 8.9 (#1)
  • Triples: 15 (#1- Tie)
  • RBI: 121 (#3)
  • SB: 64 (#2)

The Verdict: The MVP can be given to players based on a number of factors, but ultimately, both candidates are worthy. We are going with Tellez as the winner given his body of work over the past 4 seasons and as a bit of a sentimental pick since the aging star has not won the award to date.
